The Last Moment

Whitened knuckles and a heart pulsating wildly against the cage of her chest, she clenched onto the sheets with every minute ounce of strength she had left. Within her last few moments, the realisation had hit her that she will never feel any more alive than now.

Silence loomed, as her eyes turned misty from the clouded thoughts on her mind. She recognised that her time on this earth was up - that she will not be able to live the dream, or be a part of the change that she wanted to see. While she conceived of the world without her, the oblivion that she will eventually be banished into, bolts of panic hit her like an electric current.

Who will be there to mourn my death? Will they forget about my entire existence after a year? Five years? Ten? These were questions that flashed by rapidly through her mind. It dawned upon her then, that she was only as consequential as her lifespan allowed  - that even her loved ones will, someday, move on from her death. Sure, they may mourn from the initial pain of losing her. But humans, being adapted to change, will eventually move on - and she will just be a passing memory in the dwelling of their time on earth.

When this epiphany finally settled in her mind, depression came in waves, crashing upon her. There was nothing she could do, there was no way to fight back. She resented herself for being so weak, for giving in to the illness without being able to put up a substantial fight - She did try though, she definitely did. Never in her short span of life was she one to give up on a fight. She fought her beyond her will, yet, every divination, fate, or religion would not let her have it.

In her final moment, she gave in. She felt every molecule of air that once filled her lungs, slowly, but surely, seeping out. She grasped onto anything within her reach, anything that reminded her of being alive - afraid to lose touch of the earth she once dwelled in as she started fading in and out of consciousness. With a peace of mind, she gradually let out the air that, once, was her life buoy. A soft smile graced her countenance - it was one that transcended all understanding of the living. Her time was over, and she accepted it as it is.

A dull lulling from the EKG took over the silence that once filled the room. The sound resonated resoundingly in the room - almost as though it was a signal to the world of another passing.
